Whisper Interpreting

This type of interpreting means the interpreter is in the event room and whispers the translation to max. two participants. Whisper technology can also be used, i.e. the interpreter whispers into a microphone and the translation is heard via headsets to an unlimited number of listeners. This is suited for small, short events in which noise disturbances can occur and the voice of the interpreter is stressed.

Consecutive Interpreting

Consecutive interpreting is often called the classical type of interpreting. The interpreter is in the same room as the participants and is often at the same table and translates the words of the speaker/s consecutively into another language. The interpreter can either summarize a larger amount of spoken words or can break it down to a single statement. It is necessary for the speaker to take breaks in order to allow the interpreter to translate. This of course leads to a delay of approx. 100%.

It is used for shorter meetings with a lower number of participants in which only two languages are spoken. Some examples are:

  • press conferences
  • product presentations
  • sales meetings
  • some shorter speeches etc.

Simultaneous Interpreting

The interpreter is in a soundproof cabin and has a good view of the event room and speakers. The verbal presentations are translated via microphone to the participant headsets with only a slight delay in comparison to the really spoken words.

As simultaneous interpreting requires an extremely high level of concentration, interpreters usually work in teams of two or three and change every 20 to 30 minutes. This type of interpreting offers the benefit of being quite exact and leads to no interruptions by the interpreter. It is usual at larger conferences and often in combination with various languages.
